A Comparison of pH Calibration Buffers  --  VISIT
 Hits: 48Updated:
Tue 05/13/2008 @ 06:29
RATING:

One of the most common concerns of reef aquarists is pH. Some aquaria have pH that is too high, and some too low. Some have the pH just right, but the aquarist thinks it isn't. In a previous article on solving pH problems, and in a second one specifically directed to diagnosing and solving low pH problems, I pointed out that the first step is to ensure that the pH is being measured correctly.

This month, I will show how to use that material as part of an inexpensive homemade two-part calcium and alkalinity supplement. The only materials required are calcium chloride, baking soda (from a grocery store), and Epsom Salts (which is inexpensive and available at most drug stores).

RATING:

Perhaps you've read in a book or magazine, or maybe read it somewhere online, that you need to "drip kalk" as your makeup water. Everyone makes it sound so easy that you really don't want to ask how to actually do it.

A Simplified Guide to the Relationship Between Cal  --  VISIT
 Hits: 7Updated:
Wed 03/14/2007 @ 09:59
RATING:

Among the most important chemical parameters in a reef aquarium are calcium and alkalinity. Unfortunately, how these relate to each other often perplexes reef aquarists. Such relationships are well understood and described in chemical terms, and I have detailed them using chemical and mathematical equations in many previous articles.

Aluminum in the Reef Aquarium  --  VISIT
 Hits: 5Updated:
Wed 03/14/2007 @ 10:00
RATING:

Aluminum is an ion that doesn’t get much discussion in reefkeeping circles.ÂIt has little in the way of positive biological functions.ÂI am not aware of any marine organisms with a demonstrated requirement for aluminum.

Ammonia and the Reef Aquarium  --  VISIT
 Hits: 4Updated:
Mon 04/16/2007 @ 03:26
RATING:

Ammonia is one of the most studied chemicals in aquaria, and the details of its uptake, excretion and mechanisms of toxicity continue to occupy many research scientists. Because of its high toxicity, it is critically important in both freshwater and marine systems.
